Marketing and communications professionals have a vital part to play in shaping and securing successful transformation, through connecting people, places and technology to adapt and thrive in the new market order.<\/h6><h5><strong>Managing and engaging a multigenerational workplace<\/strong><\/h5><p>A unique aspect of the modern workplace is the presence of five distinct generations working together. From Traditionalists, otherwise known as the Silent Generation (born before 1945), to Gen Z (born after 1997), a convergence of age groups is taking place that has never been seen before, each with its own values, communication styles, and expectations.<\/p><p>This poses significant challenges in managing and engaging a multigenerational workforce. With such a vast array of experiences and values, how can businesses and communications professionals support effective collaboration and mutual respect across generations?<\/p><h5><strong>The multigenerational workplace \u2013 five generations, five perspectives <\/strong><\/h5><p>Let\u2019s define the groups:<\/p><ul><li><strong>Traditionalists\/the Silent Generation <\/strong>(born before 1945): Value loyalty, experience, and stability.<\/li><li><strong>Baby Boomers<\/strong> (1946-1964): Driven by hard work, discipline, and a results-oriented mindset.<\/li><li><strong>Gen X<\/strong> (1965-1980): Independent, tech-savvy, and value work-life balance.<\/li><li><strong>Millennials<\/strong> (1981-1996): Collaborative, purpose-driven, and adaptable to change.<\/li><li><strong>Gen Z<\/strong> (born after 1997): Digital \u2018natives\u2019, entrepreneurial, and highly socially aware.<\/li><\/ul><h5><strong><br \/>Challenges in a multigenerational workplace <\/strong><\/h5><p>Understanding the different ways generations communicate helps foster a collaborative and productive working environment. It has been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.degruyter.com\/document\/doi\/10.1515\/omgc-2023-0011\/html?lang=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a> each generation has distinct preferences for how they communicate &#8211; whether through face-to-face meetings, emails, instant messaging, or social media.<\/p><p>By respecting these differences, as well as similarities, businesses can enhance intergenerational collaboration, reduce misunderstandings, and leverage the unique strengths of each age group.<\/p><p>Tailoring communications strategies to meet these varied preferences not only improves engagement and morale but also drives better business outcomes by ensuring all employees feel heard and valued. It also supports better alignment of strategic brand positioning and messaging internally \u2013 crucial in large-scale, complex organisations and an important piece of the transformation puzzle.<\/p><h5><strong>A matter of priorities<\/strong><\/h5><p>But it\u2019s not just about communication, because each generation focuses to varying degrees on different aspects of their work. For example, where older generations may value job security and stability, younger employees \u2013 often cited as the generation leading the newly coined phenomenon, <em>\u201cThe Great Detachment\u201d<\/em> \u2013 could be seen to prioritise purpose, flexibility, and rapid advancement opportunities.<\/p><p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mckinsey.com\/capabilities\/people-and-organizational-performance\/our-insights\/gen-what-debunking-age-based-myths-about-worker-preferences\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Research from McKinsey<\/a><\/span> found workplace flexibility is a key factor as to why people choose to stay at a job. Employees in different age groups also value flexibility for different reasons depending on their stage of life and related responsibilities. For example, Gen Z employees may want the flexibility to travel and for a more active social life, while older millennials may desire flexibility to manage the demands of caring for loved ones.<\/p><p>In many cases, however, the similarities outweigh the differences. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.egonzehnder.com\/press-release\/new-study-from-egon-zehnder-and-kearney-debunks-the-myth-of-a-workplace-generational-divide\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Research<\/span><\/a> from leading management consultancy and executive search firm, Egon Zehnder, found different generations share more commonalities when it comes to work-life balance, wellbeing and desired traits from leadership.<\/p><h5><strong>Diversity, equity and inclusion \u2013 it\u2019s important<\/strong><\/h5><p>New research from the Work Foundation uncovered an employer \u2018say-do-gap\u2019 in terms of age inclusive policies in the workplace. A third of senior business leaders (31%) agree emphasising diversity and inclusion is important in creating a positive work culture for multi-generational workforces, but only 18% include age in equality, diversity and inclusion policies. Only 16% have a menopause support policy, and just 13% have age champion schemes.<\/p><p>With the myriad myths and misunderstandings about each generation, it\u2019s perhaps not surprising to see that discrimination exists.<\/p><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.manbitesdog.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Man Bites Dog<\/span><\/a> partnered with Mercer to deliver the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mercer.com\/en-us\/insights\/people-strategy\/future-of-work\/global-talent-trends\/#mes-dyn-form\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2024 Global Talent Trends<\/a><\/span> research, which found that globally, an alarming 76% of employees have observed age-related discrimination in the workplace. This issue affects both younger and older employees.
